Abstract


Background of the study: Dysmenorrhea is a common health problem among most of the adolescent girls which alters the daily activity. So, it is very important to make awareness regarding home remedies as a treatment for dysmenorrhea among high school girls. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of planned teaching program on knowledge and practice regarding home remedies for dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls of selected high schools at Mangaluru, Karnataka. Methodology: The design adopted is one group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design, the samples were chosen by stratified random sampling method, samples consists of 60 adolescent girls from selected high school at Mangaluru. Structured knowledge questionnaire is given to assess the knowledge and a practice rating scale to assess the practices of home remedies for dysmenorrhea. Results: The overall mean post-test knowledge score regarding home remedies for dysmenorrhea (20.72) was significantly higher than overall mean pre-test knowledge score regarding home remedies for dysmenorrhea (9.57) and the obtained ‘t’ value was 26.08, which was higher than the table value. The overall mean post-test practice score regarding home remedies for dysmenorrhea (29.67) was significantly higher than overall mean pre-test practice score regarding home remedies for dysmenorrhea (18.10) and the obtained ‘t’ value was 13.179, which was higher than the table value. So, there was no significant association found between the pre-test knowledge and practice score with the demographic variables.
