Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Renal Failure refers to a gradual and irreversible decline in renal function, leading to the body's inability to sustain metabolic, fluid, and electrolyte balance. This condition results in uremia, necessitating the reliance on hemodialysis to maintain internal equilibrium and prevent uremia. In the initial phases of renal impairment, symptoms may be alleviated through hemodialysis, monitoring fluid intake, dietary regulation, and medication use. However, as renal function deteriorates, these interventions become inadequate. So Chronic Renal Failure Patients should have knowledge regarding home care management of AV fistula to reduce complications. Objectives of the study: To evaluate the initial and final comprehension levels regarding the management of arterio-venous fistula in the context of home care among chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis at the Nephrology unit in Pt. B. D. Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak. To evaluate the effectiveness of the nurse led intervention on home care management of arterio-venous fistula among chronic renal failure patients undergoing for hemodialysis in Nephrology unit at Pt. B. D. Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak. To determine association between Pre test knowledge score with selected socio-demographic variables among chronic renal failure patients undergoing for hemodialysis in Nephrology unit at Pt. B. D. Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak. Material and Method: The research employed a quantitative methodology, utilizing a pre-experimental design involving a single group with both pre and post-test assessments. Non-probability convenience sampling was employed for sample selection. A structured interview knowledge questionnaire was utilized to evaluate subjects' knowledge concerning arterio-venous fistula home care management. The data analysis involved descriptive statistics (Mean, Mean Difference, Standard Deviation) and inferential statistics (Paired t-test). In Pre-test 53% of subjects had average knowledge, 40% subjects had inadequate knowledge and 7% subjects had adequate knowledge. But after introducing the nurse led intervention the posttest knowledge score 85% were having adequate knowledge and 15% were having average knowledge and none of subjects had inadequate knowledge. Hence, the nurse-led intervention proved to be successful. Conclusion: The study conclude that nurse led intervention was effective in improving knowledge regarding home care management of arterio-venous fistula among chronic renal failure patients undergoing for hemodialysis.
