Effectiveness of Intradialytic Exercise on Biochemical Variables and Quality of Life of Patients on Hemodialysis

Amirtha Santhi. S, Srikanth .

Abstract

A quasi-experimental study was done among hemodialysis individuals with an objective to assess the effectiveness of intradialytic exercise on biochemical variables and quality of life. Total of 134 (control group 68 and experimental group 66) samples were selected using convenience sampling technique. The experimental group had intradialytic physical activity of the extremities for 15 min duration for 2 to 3 days in a week for 6 months. The result shows that the exercise during dialysis made significant changes in sodium, calcium, potassium and hemoglobin levels in the experimental group. Engaging in physical activity led to notable improvements in general health, physical activity, social activity, pain, symptoms, effect of kidney disease, patient satisfaction, depression and stress scores. This reveals that the exercise during dialysis has significant improvement in the biochemical values and quality of life. The health care professionals face the challenge of improving the quality of life among hemodialysis individuals. So, the nurses working in the dialysis units should motivate the individuals to do physical activity during dialysis, which will improve their quality of life.
