Gerontological Nursing

Rajesh G. Konnur, Sangita Singh

Abstract

India is the capital of old age people. Due to socio-demographic transition, the elderly population is projected to rise to 12% of the total population by 2025. This, ever expanding and shooting up of percentage poses social and financial challenges and puts immense strain on healthcare delivery system towards chronic non-communicable diseases. The social-familial causes like nuclear family, fewer children, enhanced opportunities for women, rapid urbanization and rise of empty nest syndrome cases call for more focus on geriatric care. This care is delivered by inter and multi-disciplinary health Team professionals.
