Abstract

Populations around the world are rapidly ageing. Ageing presents both challenges and opportunities. Nurses play a vital role in caring the elderly. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy on psychological well-being among elderly in selected old age homes at Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu. Pre-test was conducted to assess the level of psychological well-being by using psychological well-being assessment scale for samples in experimental and control group. The investigator selected 30 samples for experimental group and 30 for control group in different settings. The intervention of reminiscence therapy was given to the samples in experimental group for 30 min every day for 1 month. After 1 month, post-test was conducted using the same tool by the investigator. The conceptual model for this study is based on the modification made on J.W. Kenny’s open system model. The study finding reveals that in experimental group, pre-test mean self-esteem score was 16.4 with standard deviation of 3.6, and the post-test mean score was 21.2 with standard deviation of 4.6. The calculated paired t-test score was 11.55. It was significant at 0.05 level. In pre-test, mean inter personal relationship score was 17.4 with standard deviation of 4.1 and the post-test mean score was 22.6 with standard deviation of 4.6. The calculated paired t-test score was 12.9. It was significant at 0.05 level. In pre-test, mean emotion score was 15.9 with standard deviation of 3.7 and the post-test mean score was 20.3 with standard deviation of 4.1. The calculated paired t-test score was 11.48. It was significant at 0.05 level. It is inferred that the reminiscence therapy was highly effective in improving psychological well-being among elderly.
