Shashi Prakash, Sembian N.

Abstract

Background: Hypoglycemia is a rare cause of movement disorders. An 80 year-old woman presented with worsening choreiform and dancing like movements due to hypoglycemia. Case presentation: 80 year old woman newly diagnosed hemichorea with involuntary movement of right hand and leg and her RBS and serum creatinine were 56 mg/dl and 1.85 mg/dl respectively. The patient’s Computed Tomography of brain was normal with the exception of age related atrophy. All laboratory findings were in normal range except calcium. The patient has been treated for hypoglycemia with intravenous solution and essential drugs. Due to consistent hypoglycemic state, the patient had developed encephalopathy and hence she went on coma. Conclusion: Hemichorea is among the rare complications of hypoglycemia, characterized by involuntary movements. Hypoglycemia should be considered as a differential diagnosis for geriatric patients presenting upon clinical assessment.
