A Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding the Ill Effects of Prolonged Sitting and the Sitting Behavior among the Employees of the Selected Departments of DM Wims Hospital

Abstract


The present study investigated the level of knowledge regarding the ill effects of sitting and the sitting behaviour among the employees of selected departments of DM WIMS Medical college Hospital. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge regarding the ill effects of prolonged sitting among employees of selected departments, to assess the sitting behaviour among employees ,to find out the association between knowledge scores regarding the ill effects of prolonged sitting among employees and selected demographic variables, to find out the association between sitting behaviour scores among employees and selected demographic variables, to find the correlation between knowledge score and the sitting behaviour scores into develop and disseminate an information poster on prevention of sitting disease. Materials and Method: The method of the study is descriptive study. A total of 80 selected employees of selected department of DM WIMS Medical College using convenient sampling technique. The demographic data was collected using specific tools. Result: (1). On analysis of the knowledge scores on ill effects of the prolonged sitting 8, 75% percentage of employees have poor knowledge, 90% have moderate knowledge and 1.25% have good knowledge regarding the ill effects of prolonged sitting. (2). On analysis of the sitting behaviour of the sample majority of the sample has moderate scores (90%), 3.75% of employees have poor sitting scores and 6.25% have good scores. (3). On analysis of association between the demographic variable and ill effects of prolonged sitting it showed significant association with hypertension. (4). On analysis of the association between the demographic variable and the sitting behaviour scores it showed significant association with distance from the workplace to the resident and also with the BMI. (5). On analysis there was a negative correlation between the knowledge scores and the sitting behaviour of knowledge and the sitting behaviour among the employees of the selected department of DM WIMS Hospital. Discussion: In this the association of knowledge and demographic variable, the value of education have significant association at 0.05 level of significance with the place of Hypertension. There was significant association between certain demographic variable and the sitting behaviour. Regarding the correlation between the knowledge scores and sitting behaviour there was a negative correlation (r = –0.04141).
