Abstract

Emotional intelligence (EI) is considered very important in our personal and professional life. It is
one of the most admired study topics that have gained significance in recent years especially in
nursing. The acknowledgment of emotional states in one’s self and others, EI may play a key role in
patient care. This study examined the baseline EI and evaluated the effect of EI training program on
clinical performance of nursing students. Quasi-experimental pretest post-test controlled group
design was used on second year B.Sc. nursing students. The data were collected by stratified
proportionate sampling from 500 students (study=250, control=250). To find out EI, Emotional
Intelligence Scale developed by Schutte N was used. To evaluate the clinical performance of second
year nursing students, clinical assessment criteria given by Maharashtra University of Health
Sciences was used. The students were evaluated in medical, surgical wards and operation theater
(OT). The study group received 12 hours of training program while control group received the
regular training. In post-test, three observations were done at the interval of one month, three and six
months. The second year B.Sc. nursing students had average to high EI before intervention. There
was no significant difference of pre-test mean EI score between study and control group as P>0.05,
whereas the mean EI scores was significantly higher in study group than the control group as
P<0.0001 in post-test I, post-test II and post-test III. After the intervention, it was observed that
clinical performances score significantly improved in study group than control group in medical and
surgical ward as P<0.001. There was no significant difference in the performance of OT experience
as P>0.05. The result of the study showed that there was significant effect of intervention on second
year B.Sc. nursing student’s clinical performance in study group. This intervention improved nursing
process, professional conduct and communication skills among nursing students.
