USE OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL) AS A TEACHING METHODOLOGY TO IMPROVE THE SKILL IN HAND WASHING TECHNIQUE AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN

Abstract


Project-based learning (PBL) is a new methodology in teaching in which students explore real life problems, issues, and challenges. It helps in active and engaged learning of students to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they are studying. A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of project- based learning as teaching methodology among final year B.Sc. Nursing students of M.O.S.C. College of Nursing. The teaching methodology was adopted to teach the hand washing technique among 82 school children in a selected school, Kolenchery. Pre-test and post-test skill assessment were conducted using structured checklist on hand washing technique. The project-based learning was conducted based in six steps: 1) start with the essential question, 2) design a plan for the project, 3) create a schedule, 4) monitor the students’ progress, 5) assess the outcome and 6) evaluate the experiences. The study findings revealed that the pre-test median skill score was 5 with IQR (4, 6) and post-test median skill score was 12 with IQR (10, 14) among school children. Statistically significant improvement in skill score was identified after the introduction of teaching methodology. A satisfaction assessment form was also distributed among the final year B.Sc. Nursing students, and it was also found that 100% of students were highly satisfied with the new teaching methodology.
