EFFECTIVENESS OF ABDOMINAL MASSAGE ON FEEDING TOLERANCE AND WEIGHT GAIN AMONG PRETERM BABIES

Joshmi P J, Marykutty Mathew, Soja SL

Abstract

A quantitative research approach with quasi experimental research design was used for the study. The study was theoretically supported by Sr. Callista Roy’s adaptation model. The study was conducted among 60 preterm babies admitted in NICU of Institute of Child Health and Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam. Sixty preterm babies were selected by nonprobability purposive sampling 30 each in control and experimental group. The objectives of the study were to assess the feeding tolerance and weight gain among preterm babies and to determine the effectiveness of abdominal massage on feeding tolerance and weight gain among preterm babies. Results of the study revealed that abdominal massage had a significant effect for improving the feeding tolerance of preterm babies in terms of gastric residual volume(p<0.05) and frequency of defecation per day (p<0.05). The study showed a significant difference in weight gain among preterm babies between control and experimental group (p<0.05).
