Develop and Test a Video-assisted Training Module on PICC Insertion for Oncology Nurses in a Tertiary Level Care Hospital, New Delhi

Abstract


Context: Nursing education and consistent care based on the uniform guidelines has an impact on PICC related outcomes. It is imperative to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice among nurses with regard to PICC as it is considered as an advanced nursing practice. Aim: To develop and test a video-assisted training module on Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter insertion (PICCTM) for oncology nurses. Settings and Design: The study was conducted in the Institute of Rotary Cancer Hospital in a tertiary level care centre, using a methodological, pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test time series design. Methods and Material: The PICCTM has been developed through an eight-stage iterative process and was administered to a group of 30 oncology nurses, who were enrolled using purposive sampling technique. Tools used were validated; self-developed subject data sheet, knowledge questionnaire, observation checklists and opinionnaire to assess the impact of PICCTM on nurses' knowledge, skill, and acceptability of PICCTM. Pre-test and first post-test was done on Day-1, followed by second post-test on Day-30. Ethical clearance was obtained. Statistical Analysis: STATA 14 was the software used to calculate descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: PICCTM was found effective in improving knowledge and skill of oncology nurses in PICC insertion. There was significant improvement in total and domain wise (cognitive and psychomotor domains) knowledge scores of oncology nurses 30 days after PICCTM (P=0.0001, P=0.0001, P=0.0001), which was independent of their socio-demographic variables. 70% of the participants in post-test-I and 90% in post-test-II have achieved good skill in PICC insertion on a mannequin. All the nurses (n=30) reported PICCTM as highly acceptable and useful. Conclusion: PICCTM had an impact on knowledge and skill of nurses regarding PICC insertion. Hence competency in PICC care and insertion can be obtained by PICCTM.
