A Quasi-experimental Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Program Regarding Legal and Ethical Issues in Mental Health Nursing Practice Among Nursing Students in Selected Colleges of Nursing, Ludhiana

Abstract


Introduction: The present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program regarding legal and ethical issues in mental health nursing practice among nursing students in selected colleges of nursing, Ludhiana. Objectives: To assess the pre-test knowledge score of nursing students regarding legal and ethical issues in mental health nursing practice in experimental and control groups; to assess the post-test knowledge score of nursing students regarding legal and ethical issues in mental health nursing practice in experimental and control groups; to compare the pre-test and post-test knowledge scores of nursing students regarding legal and ethical issues in mental health nursing practice in experimental and control groups; to find out the relationship of pre-test and post-test knowledge scores of nursing students regarding legal and ethical issues with selected variables, i.e. age, clinical exposure, residential area, type of family, monthly family income, education of the father, occupation of the father, education of the mother, occupation of the mother and source of information. Results: In this study, in control and experimental groups, maximum sample was in the age group of 22 years and minimum was in age group of 20 years; maximum sample belonged to group who have clinical exposure and minimum belonged to group who have no clinical exposure; maximum sample belonged to rural residential area and minimum to semi-urban; maximum sample belonged to nuclear type of family and minimum to extended type of family; maximum sample belonged to the group of Rs.10,001–20,000 per month of family income and minimum to group of >Rs.10,000 per month of family income; maximum sample belonged to group whose fathers are educated up to graduation and above, and minimum to group whose fathers are educated up to primary standard; maximum sample belonged to group whose fathers are farmer and minimum to group whose fathers are laborer; maximum sample belonged to group whose mothers are illiterate and minimum to group whose mothers are educated up to graduation and above, maximum sample belonged to group whose mothers are housewives and minimum to group whose mothers are laborer and business woman; maximum sample belonged to group whose source of information is healthcare professionals and minimum to group whose source of information is print media. Conclusion: The present study concludes that the difference between pre-test mean knowledge scores on legal and ethical issues in mental health nursing practice among nursing students in experimental and control groups was observed non-significant, whereas the difference between post-test mean knowledge score on legal and ethical issues in mental health nursing practice among nursing students in experimental and control groups was observed significant. Thus, structured teaching program was significantly effective in raising the knowledge of experimental group regarding legal and ethical issues in mental health nursing practice among nursing students.
