AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY TO ASSESS AND EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTRADIALYTIC STRETCHING EXERCISE ON DIALYSIS EFFICACY AMONG PATIENTS UNDERGOING HAEMODIALYSIS IN SELECTED HOSPITAL DELHI

Anshu Kain

Abstract

An experimental study to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of intradialytic
stretching exercises on dialysis efficacy among patients undergoing haemodialysis
was done in selected hospital of Delhi by Ms. Anshu Kain in partial fulfillment of the
requirements for the Degree of Master of Nursing at Nightingale Institute of Nursing,
Chaudhary Charan Singh University of Meerut during the year 2015-2016.
This study was undertaken with the objectives to: (i)To assess and evaluate
the dialysis efficacy among patients undergoing haemodialysis before and after
administration of intradialytic stretching exercise in experimental group. (ii)To assess
and evaluate the pre and post dialysis efficacy among patients undergoing
haemodialysis in control group. (iii)To evaluate the effectiveness of Intra-dialytic
stretching exercise among patients undergoing haemodialysis. (iv) To find out the
association between the post dialysis efficacy of experimental group with the selected
demographic variable.
The study was conducted at B.L. Kapoor Hospital, New Delhi. Purposive
sampling technique was done to obtain adequate samples. The samples comprised of
30 experimental group samples and 30 control group samples undergoing
haemodialysis.
The conceptual framework of the study is based on Health Promotion
Model proposed by Nola J. Pender in 1992. Quantitative Research Approach was
adopted for the study with quasi experimental pretest posttest control group design.
The tool used for the data collection was structured interview schedule for
sample characteristics and 4 parametric observation schedules for assessment of
dialysis efficacy. Content validity of the tool was done by 9 experts from the field of
Medicine and Nursing.
The data was collected from 12 th February 2016 to 29 th February 2016. Subjects
were asked to do regular exercises in first two hours of haemodialysis session for 6
alternative days.

The obtained data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics
in terms of Frequency, Percentage, Mean, Mean difference, Standard Deviation, t
value and Chi-square.
Major findings of the study are Majority of the samples were in the age group
of 51 and above years that is 40% in experimental group whereas in the control group
patients with age 51 and above are 43%. Mean post dialysis efficacy score was higher
than the mean pre dialysis efficacy score in experimental group. To obtain the
difference between experimental and control group pre and post dialysis efficacy
score was found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level of significance.
The findings of the study revealed that implementation of intradialytic
stretching exercise were effective for experimental group in increasing dialysis
efficacy in haemodialysis patients. Majority of patients felt relaxed and an
intradialytic stretching exercise used by the researcher was accepted, intradialytic
stretching exercises are non-invasive, non- pharmacological and effectives mean
which can be used for haemodialysis patients as a routine practice. Based on the
research findings further recommendations also given.
The study also has discussed the implications in the field of Nursing Education,
Nursing Research, Nursing Practice, Nursing Administration. Based on the study
findings recommendations were proposed for future research.
