Abstract

The present research was to evaluate the impact of a video-assisted training programme on residents of Thiruvanmiyur and Palavakkam in Chennai's awareness of the norovirus. Background of the study: Norovirus is a highly contagious etiological agent of acute gastroenteritis with a worldwide distribution. Norovirus produces vomiting and diarrhoea in all age groups. Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of video-assisted teaching on Norovirus among the experimental group and find out the association between the level of knowledge in the control and experimental group and demographic variables. Methodology:Quasi-experimental research design was chosen and conducted among residents (n=60) of Thiruvanmiyur and Palavakkam and those who met the inclusion criteria. Study subjects were selected by a convenient sampling method. In the experimental group (Thiruvanmiyur), the pre-test was conducted, and video-assisted teaching was explained, and the post-test was conducted. The control group was assessed using a pre-test and post-test. Results and Conclusion: (A) Experiment Group: 13% had inadequate, 37% had moderate adequate and 50% had adequate knowledge. (B) Control Group: 63% had inadequate, 34% had moderate adequate and 3% had adequate knowledge. Students' tests showed a significant effect of video-assisted teaching regarding knowledge of Norovirus among the experimental group samples than the control group samples (P<0.05). On using Chi-Square analysis, study findings show a significant association between the demographic variables like age, gender, education, occupation, monthly income, residential, area, religion, diet pattern, and source of health information on the level of knowledge about Norovirus among selected samples.

This research study revealed the importance of societal responsibility for health as evidenced by the knowledge gained from the study subjects on Norovirus and proves the role of nursing professionals in improving societal health. After the video-assisted teaching programme, the level of knowledge about norovirus was significantly different between the experimental group and the control group, and there was a significant correlation between that level of knowledge and a demographic variable, according to the research hypothesis.
