A Quasi-experimental Study to Evaluate the Impact of a Structured Training Programme on Patients' Understanding of Modifiable Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease and Its Prevention in Selected Hospitals in Moga, Punjab

Abstract


A quasi-experimental study was carried out in Moga, Punjab, to assess the effects of a structured teaching program on patients' comprehension of preventable risk factors for cardiovascular disease in selected hospitals. The study's goals were to compare pre-test and post-test knowledge of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease and its prevention among patients, to evaluate patients' knowledge of these topics before and after the tests, and to determine the relationship between knowledge and particular demographic variables. The study was conducted in two hospitals (for experimental group Rajeev Hospital and for control group Aastha Hospital, Moga). The study focused on patients as the target population. A practical sampling method using non-probability sampling was employed to select a sample of 60 patients. The study included two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group, each consisting of 30 patients. The results of the study revealed that the experimental group exhibited a significantly higher average knowledge score in the post-test compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The knowledge assessment focused on patients' understanding of modifiable risk factors linked to cardiovascular disease and preventive strategies. This indicates that structured teaching programme was effective. Knowledge of patients was good (43%) and average (57%) after the structured teaching programme. It helped the patients to increase their knowledge regarding modifiable risk factors of cardiovascular disease and its prevention.
