An Exploratory Study to Assess the Level of Blood Pressure, Associated Physical Manifestations and Risk Factors among Bank managers working in selected banks of district mohali, punjab with a view to develop informational booklet.
Abstract
Introduction: Hypertension is also known as silent killer since it has no initial symptoms but can be led to long term disease and complication. Hypertension or high blood pressure is a chronic cardiac medical condition in which the systemic arterial blood pressure is elevated. Blood pressure involves two measurements, systolic pressure (asthe heart beats) over diastolic pressure (as the heart relaxes between beats). Normal blood pressure is at or below 120/80 mmHg. High blood pressure is anything above 140/90 mmHg. Material and methods: An exploratory study to assess the level of blood pressure, Associated physical Manifestations and Risk factors among bank managers working in selected banks of District Mohali, Punjab with a view to develop informational booklet. Total 100 subjects were selected by convenience sampling technique. Blood pressure was checked by Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor in Three Consecutive days on same time, twice a day for all the subjects. Out of all subjects who were having more than normal blood pressure were checked for risk factors (Body Mass Index, Lifestyle and physical inactivity and Stress level) and physical manifestations and scoring was done according to the selected criteria. The tool consisted of four sections, Section A—Demographic variables which comprises of Age, Gender, Religion, Residence, Marital status, Educational status, Type of family, Dietary pattern, Monthly income, Type of Bank, Designation, Total work experience on Managerial post (in years), other Illness (If yes, then specify), Family History of Hypertension (If Yes, specify the relationship), Section B—Level of blood pressure is measured by Automatic Blood Pressure Monitoring Device, Section C—Risk factors associated with more than normal blood pressure among the subjects. This is divided into three parts, Part-1— Body Mass Index, Part-2—Checklist to assess the Lifestyle Pattern and Physical inactivity and Part 3—Sheldon Cohen Standardized Perceived Stress Scale to assess the stress level and Section D— Rating scale to assess the Physical Manifestations due to more than normal Blood Pressure. Written consent was obtained from the respondents in order to obtain maximum co-operation and they were assured that the confidentiality of the data will be maintained. The gathered data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The study revealed that highest (63%) of subjects had more than normal level of Blood Pressure and less than half (37%) of subjects had normal Blood Pressure levels. More than half (52%) of subjects belonged to Pre-obesity, 26% of subjects belonged to normal BMI, 14% of subjects belonged to Obesity Class I, 8% of subjects belonged to Obesity Class II associated with more than normal blood pressure levels. More than half (51%) of subjects’ average lifestyle pattern and slightly less than half 46% of subjects had good and only 3% of subjects had poor lifestyle pattern associated with more than normal blood pressure levels. Highest (63%) of subjects had low physical inactivity levels and similarly 27% of subjects had moderate physical inactivity levels and 10% of subjects had high physical inactivity levels associated with more than normal blood pressure levels. Majority (87%) of subjects were having moderate stress levels and 13% of subjects were having low stress levels associated with more than normal blood pressure levels. All most all (96%) of subjects were at mild levels of physical manifestations and 4% of subjects had moderate levels associated with more than normal blood pressure levels. Fair positive correlation was elicited between risk factors with more than normal blood pressure. The level of blood pressure was statistically significantly associated with gender only.
