Fabrication and Study of Natural Plant Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites

Haydar Zaman, Ruhul A. Khan

Abstract

Snake grass fiber (sansevieria trifasciata fiber, STF)-strengthened polypropylene (PP) based composites (30 wt% by fiber) was made by hot press technique. STFs were modified by ultraviolet (UV) rays and the composites they produced were evaluated. Optimized STFs were again modified with monomer using UV rays to progress the mechanical features of the composites. Monomer concentration and no. of UV rays were optimized in terms of grafting and mechanical features of the composites. For more advancement of the composites, STFs have been surface modified with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution with different concentrations (5-25%) under normal environment. NaOH treated STFs were then grafted with an optimized monomer solution and healed with the same UV-pass. A 15% NaOH-treatment with grafted monomer solution increased with STF grafting (0.7%), tensile strength (15%), tensile modulus (20%), and impact strength (38%) compared to optimized monomer treatment composites. The thermal stability and hardness of the NaOH-treated STF with optimized monomer composite was highest than other composites. Morphology, moisture absorption and degradation features of composites were also examined.
