Effect of Benzyl Triphenyl Phosphonium Chloride on Crystallization, Rheological Behaviour and Electrical Properties of Polypropylene and Polypropylene Grafted Maleic Anhydride

Saurabh Tiwari, Virendrakumar Gupta

Abstract

The effect of benzyl triphenyl phosphonium chloride (BTPC) on polypropylene (PP) and polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) in the proportions of 0-5% by weight studied in detail. PP/BTPC and PP/PP-g-MA/BTPC composites were produced by melt processing technique using twin screw microcompounder. Change in the force inside screw barrel during melt mixing of PP based composites were recorded. The prepared composites were analysed using rheometer, differential scanning calorimetry and hot stage optical microscopy to know its rheological properties and crystallization behavior. The complex viscosity of PP/BTPC composites were found lower as compare to polypropylene in all the range of frequency. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies shown slight increase in the crystallinity of PP/BTPC and polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride based PP/BTPC composites. Hot stage optical microscopy study depicted slight decrease in spherulite size with the addition of BTPC and PP-g-MA in polypropylene matrix. Dispersion of BTPC in polypropylene matrix was seen uninform. NMR study showed presence of BTPC in polypropylene matrix.
