Abstract

Bio-based composites are gaining significant attention as sustainable construction materials due to their eco-friendly nature and potential to reduce the environmental impact of traditional construction materials. This paper provides an overview of bio-based composites and their applications in sustainable construction. The use of bio-based materials, such as natural fibres, bio-based resins, and bio-based fillers, in composites offers several advantages, including reduced carbon footprint, renewable sourcing, and improved energy efficiency.

The properties of bio-based composites, including mechanical, thermal, and environmental characteristics, are discussed, highlighting their suitability for various construction applications. Manufacturing processes for bio-based composites are also explored, with a focus on their environmental impact and sustainability compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

Case studies and examples of bio-based composites used in sustainable construction projects are presented to demonstrate their feasibility and effectiveness. Challenges facing the widespread adoption of bio-based composites in construction, such as cost, durability, and scalability, are discussed, along with potential strategies to overcome these challenges.

Overall, bio-based composites show great promise for sustainable construction, offering a viable alternative to traditional construction materials. Continued research and development in this field are essential to further improve the properties and performance of bio-based composites and facilitate their widespread adoption in the construction industry.
