Abstract

The demand for electricity is increasing continuously and exponentially, and the conventional fuels are depleting rapidly. A number of renewable energy technologies have been studied worldwide. The most popular renewable energy technologies being used for power generation include solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind energy and biogas-based technologies. All these sources can be used for power generation and/or direct or indirect cooking. Use of biogas for power generation, cooking and its by-product (slurry) for agriculture makes it distinct from other renewable energy technologies. The main objective of this paper is to investigate optimal biogas generation for cooking and electricity, and study the effect of various parameters, viz. temperature, PH value, total solid concentration, retention time, alkalinity, etc. on the biogas generation from various organic matters by the biological breakdown. The investigated results show that biogas is the cheapest non-conventional energy produced from various organic wastes.
