Analyzing the Probable Solutions of the Effects on Electrical Grid Emerged from EV Charging

Abdul Wares Khan, Mir Mohammad Nazmul Arefin

Abstract

Electric vehicles are one of the most trending issues in the power system network. Many developed countries have already set their plan to develop corresponding infrastructures to handle the forthcoming huge EV load in the power system. A study has shown that in Britain within 2050, 70% of the vehicles would be converted to electric vehicles. In Bangladesh, electric vehicles are not widely used though, but a good number of battery-driven electric auto-rickshaws are being used. Indiscriminate charging and misuse of electricity are very common. As there is no well-set rules and regulations for charging those vehicles so that poses adverse effect to the power system. Electric vehicle adoption is also increasing in Dhaka city. This EV load can affect the voltage profile, power demand, and overall quality of the power as well. A proper system should be designed, and some rules and regulations should be set to handle these issues. In this paper, some methods would be analyzed to reduce the EV charging impacts on power systems in terms of improvement of voltage profile, percentage of total harmonic distortion (%THD), and as well as power demand.
