DC Microgrids and Their Use for Generation of Renewable Energy

Himanshu Rohilla

Abstract

A microgrid can be described as a power cluster of a system of distributed generation, load
and energy storage accumulated in the vicinity of each other. This provides an opportunity
for green and clean environment to use renewable energy sources. Due to the location of
distributed energy resources (DERs) near the load, power transmission losses are reduced.
DERs like PV, fuel cells production is DC. In the case of wind power, DC power can be
generated using portable electronic devices. The DC terminals are connected to electronic
loads, electric vehicles, and batteries which form a direct current microgrid. It is very
important to operate and control DCMG in appropriate way to achieve more reliability, cost
benefit and enhanced performance.
