Advantages of Use of Base Isolator and Fluid Viscous Dampers

Dhanesh Shrikhande, Girish Joshi

Abstract

Several disastrous earthquakes have struck the world in recent decades, resulting in increasing human
deaths due to building collapse and significant structural damage The damages due to seismic actions
have made us realise that structures (residential, industrial, bridges etc) must be designed and
constructed to be resistant to earthquake. The building which are not designed properly will be prone
to major damage. The prime option to withstand these building during severe earthquakes is seismic
improvement. There are multiple options available for seismic improvement of the building. The base
isolation technique and energy dissipation approach, on the other hand, are the most popular seismic
protection techniques. Seismic base isolation technology with use of various isolators energy disipiation
techniques (fuid viscous damper) are being used to minimize the seismic response of structure as
compared to structure with rigid base. Similarly, energy dissipation techniques like Dampers are widely
used. The techniques of base isolator and fluid viscous damper help to lessen the seismic response of a
structure when compared to a fixed base construction.
