Outcome-based Education for Engineering Education: Challenges and Implementation Strategies in Nigerian Context

OLUWADARE JOSHUA OYEBODE

Abstract

Outcome-based education (OBE) is the way forward for coping with the rapid pace of globalization,
effective technological development, effective lecture delivery, sustainable engineering practice, and
handling educational issues in Nigeria. This paper examined the challenges and implementation
strategies of OBE in the Nigerian context. The methodical approach of this paper involves checking
lecture delivery, research output, equipment of engineering faculties, and the quality of graduates in
Nigeria. Literature was reviewed especially on civil engineering education. Challenges and
implementation strategies were highlighted. There are a lot of decadences, inadequate facilities for
lectures and laboratory works, lack of manpower, and issues within industries and academia. It has
been concluded that OBE is the answer to educational issues especially in engineering fields. This
will enhance staff exchange programmes, funding, best practices, continuous quality improvement,
stakeholders’ engagements, employability, performance in the industry, competency of repentance,
improvement in visibility, and reputation of the institution, enhanced national and international
recognition of engineering graduates. The recommendation includes the embracement of OBE for
teaching, research, community development, and accreditation of all engineering institutions in
Nigeria.
