Studies on the External Genitalia of Some Species of Moths of Family Geometridae (Lepidoptera) of Morni Hills, Haryana

Meena Jatain

Abstract

The present work is a comprehensive study that aims to investigate the external genitalia of male geometrid moths collected from Morni Hills, Haryana. The study is divided into several sections, including an introduction, a review of literature, material and methods, observations, a conclusion, and references. The introduction begins by providing an overview of the family Geometridae and its characteristics. The name of the family is derived from the ancient Greek word “geo” meaning “the earth” and “metron” meaning “to measure,” and the caterpillars are accordingly called “Loopers,” “spanworms,” or “inchworms” after their characteristic looping gait. The adult geometrids are characterized by the presence of a basal fork between vein 2A and 3A in the forewing and vein M2 always originating from the middle of discocellulars. The collection of Geometridae moths was done from Morni Hills, Haryana, using a large lure system consisting of a white cloth sheet illuminated by two mercury bulbs of 160 watts each. The collection was made throughout the night, and three to four wide-mouthed glass jars were used to capture the moths. For preparing permanent slides of the male genitalia of collected species, the abdomen was detached, and potash-treated in a glass vial containing 10% KOH for about 40–50 minutes in an oven at 50°C and then dissected in water. The dissected genitalia parts were upgraded in several alcoholic grade concentrations from 30% to absolute alcohol and then cleared in clove oil and finally mounted in Canada balsam or DPX. The list of species studied includes Agathia lycaenaria lycaenaria (Kollar), Pelagodes veraria (Guenée), Heterostegane subtessellata (Walker), Hyposidra talaca talaca (Walker), Chiasmia eleonora eleonora (Cramer), Chiasmia pluviata pluviata (Fabricius), Chiasmia frugaliata (Guenée), Ophthalmitis herbidaria (Guenée), Biston suppressaria suppressaria (Guenée), and Traminda mundissima mundissima (Walker). In summary, this study provides valuable insights into the morphology of geometrid moths and can be useful in further research on their systematic and evolutionary biology.
