Sustainable Technology and Architecture for Mud House Building
Abstract
Mud is a liquid or semi-liquid mixture of water and a combination of different kinds of soil (loam, silt, and clay). It usually forms after rainfall or near water sources over time to form sedimentary rock such as shale or mudstone generally called Lutites. There are several major attractions associated with earth buildings such as cost saving, self-satisfaction, aesthetics, eco-friendly, human health, etc. Earth buildings are of two types: Adobe i.e. mud brick and Pise i.e. rammed earth. Rammed earth involves forming a framework to encase the earth with the rammed earth between two boards. Mud brick building is also known by alternative name (adobe). Of all mud building techniques - Adobe or mud brick is the most foolproof. The researcher uses a conscious approach to energy and ecological conservation in the design of the built environment in mud. Keeping in mind the principles of sustainable architecture, he seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development, space and ecosystem. This idea of sustainability or ecological design is to ensure that actions and decisions do not inhibit the opportunities of future generations. This paper helps in sharing the knowledge, experience, and recent advancements in research in sustainable mud building technology within the field of architecture. Thus, it will also provide an interdisciplinary platform for researchers, academicians and industrialists to share, discuss and promote ideas with leading, experienced professionals.
