Enhancing Walkability in Ludhianas Industrial Growth Centre A Comprehensive Analysis and Recommendations

Mostafizur Rahman

Abstract

The manufacturing sector is pivotal to economic development, and the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a crucial role in India's growth. Ludhiana, known as the "Manchester of India," is home to a significant industrial cluster with various industries, drawing workers from different states. However, the pedestrian infrastructure in this industrial hub is inadequate, leading to a challenging and often unsafe walking experience. This research paper explores the concept of walkability in the Ludhiana industrial area, assessing key parameters such as pedestrian infrastructure, safety, accessibility, connectivity, and amenities. The study reveals a range of deficiencies in the pedestrian environment, impacting the safety and well-being of workers commuting on foot. The demographic characteristics of Ludhiana and the transportation statistics underscore the importance of addressing walkability issues. The majority of workers in the area rely on public transport, cycles, or walking to reach their workplaces. Improving walkability is vital for the productivity and safety of these workers during their daily commute. The recommendations provided include creating suitable walking surfaces, installing signages and zebra crossings, establishing green buffer zones, and enhancing street infrastructure. These measures aim to transform the Ludhiana industrial area into a pedestrian-friendly environment, promoting safer, more accessible, and aesthetically pleasing pathways.
