Integrated Disaster Risk Management-Specific to Cyclone and Flood-prone area

Sowndarya Gnanaraj, Geetha Monsingh

Abstract

In India, disaster management is currently facing a big challenge in decreasing risk in the coastline zone. The community of such an area, which consists primarily of slum and squatter communities, makes the area vulnerable to cyclones, resulting in high susceptibility both directly and indirectly. The purpose of this article is to determine how communities might be better targeted to improve disaster risk reduction strategies. It looks at whether perceived convergence of disaster risk mitigation and climate change adaptation initiatives has an impact on cyclone and flood disasters. In this context, integration is characterized as the degree to which people believe they are part of a society that is both sustainable and safe when it comes to climate change. This paper discusses on one part—various indicators, stages of analysis in planning & methods in interpreting the losses and identifying vulnerable region empirically. The other part tries to illuminate international disaster frameworks and programs that have successfully attain their level in controlling disaster. The results showed a good effect in controlling the disaster through successful programs and methodology of Risk assessment and early warning systems. The results suggest that a cohesive community is more likely to respond immediately to disasters, engaging in a quick recovery. On this basis, when developing disaster risk management plans, the idea of combining disaster risk mitigation with climate change adaptation steps should be considered.
